The national reference laboratory, the Friedrich Löffler Institute, has confirmed the detection of African swine fever virus (ASF) in a wild boar carcass found on 26 November 2024 in the northern part of the Rhein-Hunsrück district. According to investigations, the carcass was washed up on the banks of the Rhine from about 100 km upstream of an active ASF area.
Since the dead wild boar came from the existing ASF restriction zone and in consultation with the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, no new restriction zones will be established around the find.
In order to confirm and prove that there is no ASF in the vicinity of the site, urgent measures have been taken. After the positive finding was confirmed on November 28, 2024, an active search for wild boar carcasses immediately began with drones and trained dogs. So far, a total of 1,850 hectares have been searched on the left and right banks of the Rhine in the Rhein-Hunsrück, Mayen-Koblenz and Rhein-Lahn districts. So far, no more carcasses have been found.
