Poland continues to confirm cases of African swine fever in wild boar in the west of the country, just 10 km from the border with Saxony and Brandenburg, Germany, which is why the Free State of Saxony has decided to strengthen its prevention measures against ASF, which came into force on April 16, 2020.
The new measures include mandatory reporting of the presence of dead or sick boars throughout Saxony to the relevant veterinary office. The carcasses will be tested for African swine fever and then disposed of in an appropriate manner through the Lenz carcass disposal facility. In addition, all healthy wild boars in the districts of Görlitz and Bautzen should also be tested.
The risk of ASF entering into Saxony is high. Close cooperation between the veterinary authorities and the hunting community is important for effective early detection.
With regard to domestic pig farms, in recent years all farms in Saxony have been informed about the disease and biosecurity measures have been increased. On March 6, the construction of a fence on the eastern bank of the Neisse river was completed to help prevent the entry of ASF-infected wild boar.
