According to Plateforme ESA's weekly bulletin of animal surveillance, a new case of ASF was confirmed in a wild boar on 10/28/2019 and declared on 11/04/2019. The animal's remains were found on the Lagland military base near Arlon, northeast of the infected area and location of the first case. This is the first confirmed case since August 14. However, the animal had been dead for more than six months according to the decomposition of the remains and laboratory dating techniques. The animal, therefore, would have been infected prior to May of 2019.
According to Walloon government data, as of November 4, 828 of the 4,083 tested feral pigs had been found positive for ASF virus since the outbreak of the disease.
In recent months, there has been a reduction in the number of infected animals found dead or slaughtered by health authorities. This recent finding confirms however, that precautions should still be taken with regard to the interpretation of this decrease, particularly due to the variability in the time between the death of the infected animals and the discovery of their carcasses.
