The Directorate General of Animal Health (DGSAF) has defined strict control measures in the infected area to stop the spread of ASF, which include:

Wild boar:

  • Hunting "of any kind" and all outdoor activities are prohibited.
  • Active search for carcasses.
  • Management and disposal of all carcasses found in the territory of the infected area.
  • Movement of meat, meat products, and any other products obtained from hunted or slaughtered wild boar outside the infected area is prohibited.

Pigs raised on farms (including wild boar):

  • Census of all farms and identification of any unregistered farms housing wild boars, even temporarily and/or for any reason.
  • Immediate culling of pigs housed on free-range, semi-free-range, and mixed farms and prohibition of restocking for 6 months from January 18, 2022.
  • Scheduled culling of pigs on commercial farms and prohibition of breeding and restocking for 6 months from January 18, 2022.
  • Virological control of all dead pigs and suspected cases.
  • After 6 months from the restocking ban and once the existing epidemiological situation has been evaluated, farms may be restocked after verification by the relevant veterinary services.
  • Movement bans for pigs kept on farms:
    • prohibition of movement of pigs housed on farms located in an infected area, with the exception of movement for slaughter purposes upon authorization of the veterinary services;
    • prohibition of movement of pigs housed on farms to and from the infected area;
    • prohibition of movement of reproductive material, animal by-products, fresh pork, and pork products, including casings, from pigs in the infected area to outside the infected area.
