The first ever cases of African swine fever (ASF) outside Luzon have been reported on the island of Mindanao. Upon receiving the incident report on January 28, the authorities including the provincial government of Davao Occidental conducted investigations in eight districts in the town of Don Marcelino and seven in Malita.
The province has a pig population of 100,000. According to the OIE, at least 1,000 animals have been killed already.
Animal movement has been restricted with the "1-7-10 protocol," quarantine checkpoints are established in areas within 1-kilometer radius of suspected farms, surveillance and limited animal movement are enforced within 7-kilometer radius, and farm-owners are mandated to report related cases within the 10-kilometer radius.
The movement of pork and animals from these areas has been banned until proven safe by veterinary professionals.
The DA is offering compensation to farmers for every hog culled. In addition, loans to assist financial recovery are offered.
