On April 4, a pig was discovered washed ashore on the coast of Taiwan. It was sent for sampling and tested positive for African swine fever (ASF). The detected sequence matched ASF strains from Mainland China.
An emergency response was initiated to control movement in the area. There were 11 pig farms with 2719 pigs total within the 10 km radius from the spot where the pig was found. These farms were tested for ASF and so far the pigs have been found to be in good health. This means the possibility of the pig drifting in from off shore cannot be ruled out at this time.
In addition to sampling the farms in the area, other measures are being implemented such as searching the beach, inspections of ships entering the fishing port, and strengthening of pre- and post-slaughter inspections.
The public is reminded to not bring back animal products when travelling abroad and farmers are reminded to maintain good biosecurity practices on-farm and in transport of feed and animals.
