On January 20, Greek veterinary authorities confirmed the presence of African swine fever (ASF) in a dead female wild boar found in the municipal district of Petritsi, municipality of Sintiki, Serres regional unit, in the north of the country near the border with Bulgaria and North Macedonia, countries where the disease is present in both domestic pigs and wild boars.

This finding marks the reintroduction of the disease in the country, following a single outbreak detected on a domestic swine farm also located in the Serres regional unit in February 2020, which was eradicated with no new cases detected.

The Ministry of Rural Development and Food has already put in place the necessary measures to address the disease in accordance with EU and national legislation and has activated the National Center for Disease Control and the National Task Force on African Swine Fever.
