Restricted zones will be slightly extended in Saxony to combat African swine fever (ASF). Restricted zone I, known as the buffer zone, is being extended westward into the districts of Nordsachsen and Mittelsachsen to construct a protection corridor, consisting of a parallel fence. Restricted zone II, the designated core zone, will be extended slightly to the south. In the future, it will include the entire district of Bautzen up to the state border with the Czech Republic, as well as additional small areas in the districts of Meissen and Saxon Switzerland/Eastern Iron Mountains, as well as the state capital Dresden.
The extension of the buffer zone a few kilometers to the west creates the legal possibility for the construction of the protection corridor. The protection corridor is the area between two parallel fences extending about two kilometers apart, according to the "white zone" model. Initially, there will be a total of three such corridors. In addition to the western corridor currently being planned, a large part of the protection corridors in the north of the common state border with Brandenburg and in the east parallel to the border with Poland have already been made. In the protection corridors, an intensive search for carcasses and a reduction of the wild boar population is being carried out.
As of October 31, 2020, a total of 1720 ASF cases have been confirmed in Saxony in the districts of Görlitz, Bautzen, and Meissen.
