Philippines: Update on the ASF situation

An estimated five million hogs have been killed due to African swine fever since its appearance in the country in 2019.

On Mindanao, Zamboanga City conducted active surveillance and obtained negative results in early 2023 and is awaiting a formal declaration. According to the City Government of Zamboanga as of March 7, the cumulative pig mortality was 4,655 with 1,122 culled; a total of 1,098 pig farmers in 34 out of 98 barangays in Zamboanga City were affected.

ASF was also confirmed on Dinagat Islands. Positive cases were confirmed last month in Davao de Oro Province in Maragusan Municipality. In Visayas, Cebu Province confirmed its first ASF case on March 1, 2023. As of March 21, ASF has affected six localities in the province. ASF cases have also been reported in Iloilo, Guimaras, and recently in Capiz provinces.

Carcar City is now under the "red zone" where the disease has been detected. Surveillance conducted revealed that ASF has affected 3 out of 15 barangays of the city as of March 13. Consequentially, four adjacent towns namely San Fernando, Barili, Aloguinsan, and Sibonga have been placed under the "pink" buffer zone.

Rolando Tambago, president of both the Central Visayas Pork Producers Cooperative and the Pork Producers Federation of the Philippines, said that based on private sector estimates, five million hogs have been killed due to ASF since its appearance in the country in 2019.
