The Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Integration and Consumer Protection of the State of Brandenburg (MSGIV) has reported the presence of a wild boar carcass suspected to be positive for African swine fever (ASF) in Groß Glienicke, Potsdam, outside the current restriction zones and approximately 100 km from the nearest outbreak.
The carcass is being analyzed at the National Reference Laboratory at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (Federal Research Institute for Animal Health) in Riems (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania).
To date, domestic pig populations in Germany are free of ASF. In light of this situation, the German Minister of Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, calls for further measures against wild boar to keep the domestic pig population free of the disease.
Among the various measures to combat the spread of the disease, 63 kilometers of fences have been built along the border in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 127 kilometers in Brandenburg and 56 kilometers in Saxony, and the temporary mobile electric fences are gradually being replaced by permanent ones. However, authorities repeatedly report the deliberate destruction of the fences, which represents a serious threat to the success of the control of the epidemic, according to statements by Minister Klöckner.
