Outbreaks of influenza virus in pigs has occurred in western New South Wales, northern Victoria and south-east Queensland. These outbreaks are in commercial piggeries.

In all cases the symptoms observed have been mild and pigs have recovered quickly.

Laboratory tests have confirmed that the virus in the NSW piggery is the same as that effecting the human population – pandemic influenza (H1N1) 2009.

Further laboratory testing is needed to confirm this exact strain in the other two piggeries at this stage.
