Australia -Livestock numbers down, pig numbers remain steady

Meat cattle numbers fell to 24 million from 2008-09 and dairy cattle numbers have continued their decline since industry deregulation, falling to 2.5 million head. Sheep numbers remain at their lowest level since 1905 and pig numbers have remained steady, but at decade-low levels.

Meat cattle numbers fell to 24 million from 2008-09 and dairy cattle numbers have continued their decline since industry deregulation, falling to 2.5 million head. Sheep numbers remain at their lowest level since 1905 and pig numbers have remained steady, but at decade-low levels.

Total pig numbers continued to decline marginally in 2009-10 by 12,000 head, down to 2.3 million head. Falls were recorded in all states except Victoria which registered a substantial increase of 96,000 head, up by 23%.
