The confirmation of a second case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Hungary, on a dairy cattle farm with over 3,000 head, has led Hungarian authorities to establish a surveillance zone that extends into Austrian territory.
In light of this uncertain situation, Austrian authorities have decided to expand the surveillance zone within Austria. In this zone, farms with susceptible animals are inspected by the authorities, and random samples are taken from the animals.

The last outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Austria occurred in 1981.

Surveillance zone (4 municipalities):
- The animal population in this zone is low: a total of 43 animals are kept in 11 premises (12 sheep, 3 goats, and 28 cattle).
- All premises are under the control of official veterinarians.
Additional restriction zone (part of 2 Federal States: Lower Austria and Burgenland):
- In this zone, susceptible animals are kept in 1,103 premises, with a total of 82,064 animals (64,812 pigs, 5,814 sheep, 1,750 goats, 8,813 cattle, 512 other ruminants, and 363 camelids).
