Austria: reduction in the slaughter of pigs

During the first half of this year, the number of slaughtered animals has been a 2.5% lower in comparison with last year.

During last year 5.56 million pigs were slaughtered in Austria: this is a 0.4% less that during the previous year, whereas during the first half of this year the number of slaughtered animals has been 2.68 million: a 2.5% less in comparison with last year.

In relation to the foreign trade of live pigs and pork during last year (2011), different trends were seen: whilst the imports of live pigs rose a 1.9% (some 619,000 pigs) and the exports fell a 3.5% (some 117,000 animals), the meat imports rose a 6.6% and the meat exports rose a 7.4%. Regarding the first half of this year, approximately 245,000 live pigs were imported and 41,000 were exported.

According to Statistics Austria the total number of pigs for the reference day 1 December 2011 amounted to about 3.0 million which is - compared to 2010 - a decrease by 4.1%.
