Belgium's Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FAVV) has taken an important step with China's General Administration Customs (GACC) in expanding the export of Belgian pork products to China. After extensive negotiations, an agreement was signed this week. It concerns products such as pig's feet that are little consumed in Belgium but are very popular in China.
When African swine fever emerged in Belgium in 2018, many third countries, including China, imposed restrictions on the trade of Belgian pork. It took years of negotiations before most countries lifted their embargo. Belgian pork has once again been approved for export to China as of the beginning of 2024. The extension of this agreement opens the door to more export opportunities for the Belgian pig sector.
According to David Clarinval, Federal Minister of Agriculture, "By promoting access for Belgian products to the Chinese market, farmers can ask for a better price for all of their products."
