Wild boars have been repopulating in Flanders since 2006 after they were virtually exterminated around World War II. It is unknown how many wild boars roam Flemish territory today however depopulation figures suggest that the population is steadily growing and spreading further.
Limburg has the most wild boars. Last year, more than 3,000 wild boars were shot in Flanders with 2,719 being shot in the province of Limburg, an increase of 25% compared to in 2022. The annual monitoring of the slaughter shows an increasing trend with a striking peak in 2021.
The city of Genk has once again leased hunting rights to contain the boar population to minimize damage to residential areas and agriculture.
