As of December 25, 2023, it will no longer be mandatory to submit samples for testing for African swine fever (ASF) before each treatment of a group of sick pigs. The financing of the analysis of these samples by the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) will be stopped on January 1, 2024. From then on, only analyses of suspected ASF will be reported by the veterinarian and will be charged to the FASFC. The amended regulations were published in the ministerial decision on December 15, 2023.

Belgium has not had any infected animals since 2020. The mandatory sampling was a consequence of the outbreak in September 2018, when ASF was confirmed in wild boars in the province of Luxembourg. Measures were taken at various levels to prevent the introduction and spread of ASF at pig farms. Two years later Belgium was again ASF-free.
