By the initiative of the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Willy Borsus, the Belgian Parliament approved a measure for supporting the pig and cattle industry.

The measures involve the suppression of the contributions to the pig sector animal health fund, that entail savings for €4 million, and a reduction of the contributions by 47% for the cattle sector, that will allow to save €7 million.

These measures have been implemented due to the persistent economic crisis suffered by both sectors for several years. According to the last study by SPF Economy published in June 2016, the price paid to the pig producers since the first trimester of 2013 (before the Russian embargo) and the first trimester of 2016 fell by 22.2%, whilst the price paid for milk to the producers decreased by 36% between the first trimester of 2014 and the first trimester of 2016.
