By a majority vote, the Plenary of the Legislative Assembly approved the bill (PL) that authorizes population control and sustainable management of the European wild boar in Santa Catarina. The bill was approved with an amendment requiring the authorization of the owner, lessee, or possessor of the property to carry out the control of the animal on rural property.
According to the text of Bill 393/2023, population control and sustainable management are considered to be the pursuit, slaughter, and capture of the European wild boar (Sus scrofa) followed by its elimination. Control can be carried out by hunting, trapping, or other methods approved by the appropriate environmental agency.
According to the author of the bill, the aim is to combat the overpopulation of wild boar, an exotic, invasive species with no natural predators, which has caused damage to farming in Santa Catarina.
