A containment zone has been approved by the OIE and the “FMD free zone where vaccination is not practiced” status has been re-instated. This status applies to zones 3c, 4a, 4b, 5, 6 (excluding the containment zone), 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 18. Booster vaccination of small stock within the containment zone is ongoing: a total of 10,754 small stock of which 9,083 goats and 1,671 sheep.


Continuous surveillance is still ongoing to monitor FMD situation. Surveillance in pigs is namely passive. A third serological surveillance is scheduled before the end of October 2011. Surveillance in wild animals continues to be visual. There has not been any suspicion of FMD.

Cumulatively, 41,699 cattle have been destroyed within the containment zone. Helicopter search will be used to locate and destroy the left over animals within the containment zone.

Biosecurity measures are in place to keep the disease in the containment zone.

On 25 May 2011, two animals were reported by a farmer at Ramokgwebana crush with a history of salivation and lameness. On investigation by the FMD Emergency Alert Team, lesions were confirmed to be consistent with foot and mouth disease lesions.
