The Federal Senate authorized on Tuesday, April 14 that the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) will extend temporary contracts for 269 veterinarians by two more years. The measure is included in the Bill of Law 5/2020, under Provisional Measure 903/2019. The document now moves to presidential approval.

The veterinary doctors work in slaughterhouses in the ante and post mortem inspection lines (before and after the slaughter of animals). The auditors were hired via public tender in 2017, to work for a period of two years, 40 hours/week. With this extension, the contracts will now be valid for a total of four years. Most of the inspectors will be hired until February 2022, depending on their start date.

The budget for the 2-year extension of temporary contracts is estimated at R$ 73.5 million, according to the Ministry.
