The total pork exports (bearing in mind all the products, fresh and frozen) reached 278.3 thousand tonnes between January and June 2018, according to the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA). The exported volume was 18.9% lower than that reached in the first six months of 2017, when 242.3 thousand tonnes were exported.
The income of the sales accumulated by this sector in 2018 have added up USD567.2 million: a balance 30.4% lower than the USD814.7 million registered in the first semester of 2017.
According to Mr Francisco Turra, The President of the ABPA, “The road blocks in the last 10 days of May increased the impacts suffered by the sector with the Russian embargo since December 2017, and this becomes clear when we compare the results in May and June.”
Even with the impacts of the road blocks, the sales of pork to China kept an upward trend during the first semester 2018. A total of 68.9 thousand tonnes where exported during this period: a volume 170% higher than the 25.8 thousand tonnes exported in the same period in 2017.
Hong Kong (the current main destination of Brazilian pork exports) imported 79.3 thousand tonnes in the first semester of 2018: a volume 12% higher than in the same period in 2017 (70.7 tonnes).
