After 15 years, Embrapa Swine and Poultry, which focuses on scientific research for two of Brazil's largest production chains, responsible for exporting 6.21 million tons of animal protein in 2023, 5.009 million tons of which will be chicken meat and 1.201 million tons of pork, will once again receive funding from the Federal Government, through the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC).
The list of equipment imported with funds from the program, which will put Embrapa Swine and Poultry at least on a par with the best international laboratories, includes isolation rooms, used to house animals that have been inoculated with diseases for research tests.
Also on the list of acquisitions is the new generation nucleic acid (DNA/RNA) sequencing platform which, according to researcher Rejane Schaefer, will be used in research projects aimed at the genetic characterization of microorganisms with a focus on evolutionary analyses, especially for pathogens with a high mutation rate, such as Influenza A viruses.
The scientist says that it will also be possible to meet PAC actions in health surveillance and the development of inputs (such as rapid molecular diagnostic kits and vaccines) for avian influenza and African swine fever.
