The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supplies (MAPA) published, in the Official Journal of the Union, the Normative Instruction (NI) no. 12, with the requirements for the pre-slaughter handling and the slaughter of the animals. This training is needed so the people in charge of the humane slaughtering with a commercial goal obtain a certificate of aptitude.
The humane slaughter is a set of technical and scientific guidelines that guarantee animal welfare, and of its transport from the farm to the abattoir, avoiding abuses, negligence and reducing losses in the production chain.
The goal of the NI is to accredit organisations so they can teach humane slaughter courses and, in this way, maintain the quality control of the education, with a suitable training and distribution of the teaching aids.
The accreditation of the organisations regarding the humane slaughter is a requirement of the European Union (EU). The EU is one of the main purchasers of Brazilian meat products. Regarding the domestic market, the requirements will be the same.
The pre-slaughter handling procedures and the slaughter of animals for human consumption, as well as animal welfare in all the stages, cannot be ignored. If they are carried out incorrectly, there are losses in profitability, because stressed animals may produce meat cuts with defects, lesions and fractures.
