The Department of non-tariff negotiations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supplies of Brazil (MAPA) has received the announcement of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) of South Africa on the reopening of its market, allowing Brazil to resume the exports of fresh pork for its retail sale in South Africa.
Since 2005, the negotiations for the resuming of the exports have been carried out. The trade standstill was decided on due to the foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in Brazil that year. Since 2014, South Africa only imports Brazilian pork for the processing industry (sausages). In 2014, the exports of pork to South Africa amounted US$25,000; in 2015 US$538,000; and in 2016 US$3.7 million.
Apart from Brazil, the main exporters of pork to South Africa are the EU (especially Germany) and Canada.
