With symptoms similar to those of foot and mouth disease, Senecavirus A infection is a concern for pig producers in the Triângulo Mineiro region. IMA (Instituto Mineiro de Agropecuária) inspections have been intensified upon suspicion of vesicular disease. Pigs are lame and have lesions in the oral cavity, snout, and hooves.
In Minas Gerais, the first case of Senecavirus A infection occurred in 2014 in the city of Uberlândia, and it re-emerged in October 2019 on several farms in the Triângulo Mineiro.
This year alone, about 60 farms were inspected, and the presence of Senecavirus A was detected on some of them. IMA is alerting farmers and veterinarians responsible for pig farms to the importance of immediate notification of any suspicion of the disease. Reporting or any epidemiological information can be done at IMA offices distributed throughout the state.
