According to an article published in the journal CFMV, today 95% of Brazil's industrial pig production is free of classical swine fever (CSF) and is recognized as a CSF-free zone by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). However, there are endemic areas of the disease in the north-east of the country. Recently, there have been outbreaks in the states of Ceará, Piauí and Alagoas.
The strategic plan was developed by the National Health Program of the Ministry of Swine and will be implemented in the 11 Brazilian states considered not free of CSF: Alagoas, Amapá, Amazonas (part), Ceará, Maranhão, Pará, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Roraima. Together, they account for about 18% of the national pig census, with about 300,000 rural operations, according to the map. The idea is for the ministry to monitor the measures to be taken, which will be the responsibility of the states.
