The measures implemented throughout history to eradicate this disease will be solemnly acknowledged in the 86th General Session of the WOAH/OIE’s General Assembly, that will be held in Paris (France) from May 20th to 25th.
The meeting will gather representatives from the 181 member states, and it will be attended by Heads of State and Ministers of Agriculture.
Brazil will receive the international certificate as foot-and-mouth disease-free area with vaccination, encompassing the states of Amapá, Roraima, and zones of Amazonas and Pará. With it, the implementation process of foot-and-mouth disease-free areas includes all the Brazilian territory and this country becomes free of foot-and-mouth disease.
The President, Mr. Michel Temer, will participate in the WOAH/OIE’s annual meeting on May 22nd and 23rd, and the Minister Mr. Blairo Maggi will receive the certification on May 24th, that will be handed by the General Director, Ms. Monique Eloit.
The next step will be the last stage in the eradication of the disease, with the expansion of the foot-and-mouth disease-free area without vaccination, as planned in the Foot-and-Mouth Disease Eradication and Prevention National Program (PNEFA). To that end, it will be essential to strengthen the Veterinary Services, the surveillance and prevention of the disease, and the public and private associations.
As of May 2019, the states of Acre and Rondônia, as well as municipalities in the states of Amazonas and Mato Grosso, will start the discontinuation of vaccination. The forecast is that the producers quit vaccination after May 2021, and that the whole country is considered a foot-and-mouth disease-free country by the WOAH/OIE in May 2023.
