Brazilian pig production increases in the first quarter

Historic hog slaughters were recorded for the first three months of the year, resulting in the best first quarter on record.

In the first quarter of 2022, 13.64 million head of pigs were slaughtered, up 7.2% compared to the same period in 2021 (+920,430 head) and up 1.5% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021. The months of January, February, and March, saw historic numbers of pigs slaughtered resulting in the best first quarter in the historical series since the survey began in 1997.

Increases were seen in 19 of the 25 states investigated. Increases occurred in Paraná (+229,390), Santa Catarina (+176,920), Rio Grande do Sul (+157,810), São Paulo (+143,330), Minas Gerais (+120,180), Mato Grosso do Sul (+26,640), and Goiás (+18,420). The most significant decrease occurred in Mato Grosso (-5,040).

Santa Catarina continues to be the leading Brazilian state in pig production, with 28.1% of the national slaughter, followed by Paraná (20.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (17.4%).
