In the second quarter of 2023, 14.08 million head of pigs were slaughtered in Brazil, representing a drop of 1.0% compared to the same period of 2022 and 0.6% compared to the first quarter of 2023. This interrupts the positive annual trend that had been occurring since the second quarter of 2014.
There were 148.23 thousand fewer hogs slaughtered in the second quarter of 2023, compared to the same period of 2022, influenced by a reduction in 17 of Brazil's 24 federative units.
The largest drops occurred in Rio Grande do Sul (-108.59 thousand head), Minas Gerais (-85.43 thousand head), São Paulo (-60.87 thousand head), Mato Grosso (-53.36 thousand head), and Goiás (-53.30 thousand head). On the other hand, the largest increases occurred in Santa Catarina (+133.33 thousand head), Paraná (+81.78 thousand head) and Mato Grosso do Sul (+15.20 thousand head).
Santa Catarina continues to lead swine production, with 29.7% of the national share, followed by Paraná (21.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (16.5%).
