In a monthly comparison between 2023 and 2022, January showed the biggest increase (+333,100 head). Only in April, September, and December did pig slaughtering fall. In 2023, fresh pork exports reached record levels in Secex's historical series and in the month-on-month comparison between 2023 and 2022, only August and October saw decreases. Production costs (corn and soybean meal) for pig farming were down in 2023 due to the record harvest that year and the slowdown in supply growth.
Compared to the previous year, there were 707,33 thousand more head of pigs slaughtered in 2023, driven by increases in slaughtering in 9 of the 24 Federative Units participating in the survey. Among those with a share above 1.0%, there were increases in Paraná (+660.63 thousand head), Santa Catarina (+631.22 thousand head), and Mato Grosso do Sul (+64.29 thousand head). On the other hand, there were decreases in Minas Gerais (-266.10 thousand head), São Paulo (-166.97 thousand head), Mato Grosso (-126.92 thousand head), Goiás (-54.25 thousand head), and Rio Grande do Sul (-20.85 thousand head).
Santa Catarina maintained the lead in pig slaughter in 2023, with 29.5% of national slaughter, followed by Paraná (21.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (17.0%).
Pig slaughter totaled 14.15 million head in the fourth quarter of 2023, up 1.1% from the same quarter in 2022 and down 3.4% from the previous quarter.
