After 6 months without any new ASF outbreaks on large commercial farms, the National Reference Laboratory in Sofia confirmed the presence of the disease on a pig farm with 24,000 susceptible animals located in Nikola Kozlevo, Shoumen district.

The most recent outbreaks on large, commercial farms occurred in July on operations with 17,000, 30,000 and 40,000 animals.

Bulgaria confirmed its first case of ASF in August 2018, in domestic pigs. From the beginning of the epidemic until July 2019, only cases in wild boar were reported. However, since the second outbreak of ASF in domestic pigs at the beginning of July, the cases have been more frequent, reaching the current total of 65 cases on commercial and backyard farms.
