The Department of Climate Action, Food, and Rural Agenda of the Government of Catalonia is providing the leading industry with 46 million euros to implement biogas plants in small and medium-sized farms as a priority. The objective is to valorize livestock manure and organic waste to obtain biogas and use it to generate heat, electricity, biomethane, and biofertilizers.
This is the first call within the Catalan Biogas Strategy of Catalonia 2024-2030 framework, which foresees 80 million euros over the next 5 years. The Government estimates that with the upcoming calls, it will be possible to create 80 new facilities and reach 150 in 2030 to valorize livestock excrement, generate energy, and reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 350,000 tons.
Catalonia is one of the European regions with the greatest availability of resources and, in this sense, biogas is a great opportunity for the territory, economically, energetically, and environmentally. There are currently 72 plants in operation, including landfills, treatment of sewage sludge, municipal and industrial organic waste, co-digestion, and livestock manure. With the 80 new facilities expected to be implemented with the calls for aid, biogas production is expected to more than triple.
