According to data from the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, between July 1, 2019 and April 9, 2020, Russia exported 34.5 million tonnes of cereals, including 28.6 million tonnes of wheat, 3.1 million tonnes of barley, and 2.6 million tonnes of maize (not including trade with the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union in February and March 2020).
Russia put a 7 million t export quota in place for wheat, maize, rye, and barley from April 1 to June 30, 2020. At the current rate, the quota could be exhausted by mid-May or even earlier. As of April 19, 2.92 million t of the total quota has been used.
With more than two months left before the end of the current agricultural season, some major grain exporters are beginning to prepare to withdraw from the market until July. The risk of exhausting the export quota early is increasing and the price competitiveness of Russian wheat started to decline on the international market.
