The Council of Ministers for Sustainability has approved the first environmental odor standard in Chile: the Pollutant Emission Standard for Pig Farms.
As a result of the application of the standard, it is expected to prevent and control the emission of odors from pig farms through the establishment of technological improvements and thus reduce odor emissions from the source. Its scope of application is nationwide and will apply to swine farms with more than 750 animals.
As for the requirements of the standard, it sets limits, with the objective of reducing odor emissions through the best available technologies. Thus, for example, pig farms that still have untreated slurry lagoons must implement control technologies to reduce odor emissions. In addition, the future regulation adds reporting requirements for operational practices that will help to reduce odor events and improve communication between authorities, regulated establishments, and the community.
The regulation will come into force once it is published in the Official Gazette, and both control and supervision will be the responsibility of the Superintendency of the Environment, which will ensure compliance with the standards established in the regulation and will coordinate a reporting system that will allow companies to self-monitor and provide updated information.
