Chile: the pig sector improves in matters of animal health

The Chilean pig sector is still improving in the strengthening of animal health through the implementation of prevention, control and eradication programmes.

The Chilean pig sector is still improving in the strengthening of animal health through the implementation of prevention, control and eradication programmes regarding diseases with a great impact on production.

In this context, a public-private seminar was held in which the pig producers and the SAG participated. The state of the PRRS Control and Eradication Official Programme and of the PED Control and Prevention Programme was evaluated.

Regarding PRRS, in May 2014 the peak of infected animals was reached, and currently there is a decrease in the umber of affected animals by 71.7%, the SAG reported. The health authority added that there has also been an improvement by 64.4% in the health plans of the positive herds.

With respect to PED, since the notice of the spreading and the seriousness of the virus in US, the SAG, with the help of the ASPROCER, has worked on the planning of a series of measures.
