It was approved at the General Session on 26 May that five veterinary laboratories of China were designated as OIE Reference Laboratories, i.e. the National Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Reference Laboratory of Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), the Laboratory for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) of Harbin Veterinary Research Institute of CAAS, the Laboratory for White Spot Disease (WSD) and the Laboratory for Infectious Hypodermal and Hematopoietic Necrosis(IHHN) of the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences and the Laboratory for Spring Viremia of Carp (SVC) of Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. These have been the second group of OIE-recognized Chinese veterinary reference laboratories since the National Avian Influenza (AI) Reference Laboratory was certified in 2008.
According to Zhang Zhongqiu, Delegate of China to the OIE and Director General of the Veterinary Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), the recognition of the five veterinary laboratories of China indicated that the technical capacity of some of our veterinary laboratories had been internationally advanced and widely acknowledged by the international community. MOA would further increase support for development of veterinary infrastructure in collaboration with other related agencies, improve distribution of the laboratory network, enhance capacity-building of laboratories and development of their human resources, upgrade laboratories’ R&D capacity in veterinary diagnostic technologies and their management, and assist qualified veterinary laboratories to apply for the designation of OIE Reference Laboratory in order to improve the capacity and level of China in terms of participating in formulation of international animal health standards and rules, promote foreign trade in animal products and boost the international competitiveness of the livestock and aquaculture sectors of the country.
