In the first three months of this year, China has imported 420,000 t of pork, which is 64% lower compared to the first quarter of 2021 when imports reached 1,160,000 t.
Chinese import demand for pork soared during 2019 due to the lack of supply caused by the emergence of ASF for the first time in the country in 2018. In 2020, imports nearly quadrupled compared to data prior to the disease's emergence. However, since 2021 the increase in animal inventory and pork production was increasing and this already allowed a 15% decrease in imports compared to 2020.
Forecasts point to a 20% reduction in imports by 2022. It should be noted that the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) proposed by the Chinese government plans to stabilize pork production capacity at around 55 million tons. For reference, China produced 41 million tons of pork in 2020.
