This past April, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China presented its document, Agricultural Outlook 2020-2029.
With regard to pork, the report predicts that due to African swine fever and COVID-19, China's pork production will fall to 39 million tonnes this year, which is 7.5% less than in 2019. The pork market will remain tight, and the price of live pigs will remain high. However, the report also predicts that pork production capacity will return to 2018 levels in the year 2022. Thereafter, the market will show a steady growth trend. By 2029, pork production is expected to approach 60 million tons. Due to the low domestic supply, pork imports are expected to reach an all-time high and maintain a high level in the early stages, but imports will continue to decline as production increases in the middle and late stages. Thus, pork imports will decrease to about 1.2 million tons in 2029.
In relation to agricultural products, the report states that China is basically self-sufficient in grain supply. In recent years, China's grain production has remained stable with yields exceeding 650 million tons for five consecutive years. In 2019, the harvest reached a historic high of 663 million tons.
