China has authorized the import of pork and pork by-products from Russia, the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China announced. According to the department, starting from January 24, "imports of pork and edible pork by-products from Russia that meet the relevant requirements are allowed".
Russia's trade representative in China said that supplies of Russian pork to China may begin in the second half of 2024. In September 2023, the Chinese authorities lifted temporary restrictions related to African swine fever, which had been in effect for Russia since 2008.
According to estimates from the National Union of Pork Producers, Russian pork exports to China may reach 150-200 thousand tons per year. Thanks to the Chinese market, total exports of this product from Russia could reach 400-500 thousand tons per year. Rusagro may become one of the key beneficiaries of the opening of the Chinese market. The company is currently the third-largest pork producer in Russia.
