China: outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Tibet

The National Foot-and-Mouth Disease Reference Laboratory on Monday confirmed the cases as type A foot-and-mouth disease.

A total of 43 pigs showed symptoms associated with FMD.

At the PIADC scientists have produced a molecular vaccine against one strain of FMD, that 1) does not use a live FMD virus for vaccine manufacture, and; 2) can be used to differentiate an infected from inoculated animal using common diagnostic tests.

The aim of the FMD Global Strategy is to decrease the impact of FMD worldwide by reducing the number of disease outbreaks in infected countries until they ultimately attain FMD-free status, as well as by maintaining the official FMD-free status of countries that are already free.

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) remains one of the world’s most widespread epizootic animal diseases.

According to information submitted to the OIE by Dr Zhang Zhongqui, Director General , China Animal Disease Control Centre, a new outbreak of FMD has been confirmed in Jing Xiang village (GUIZHOU).
