China: Pork and pig prices lower, pork supply guaranteed

Live pig production in China has continued to recover, resulting in lower prices.

According to monitoring by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, as of December 2020, the stock of reproductive sows across the country has increased month-on-month for 15 consecutive months, and the stock of live pigs has increased month-on-month for 11 consecutive months. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, by the end of December 2020, the number of live pigs reached 407 million, and the number of breeding sows reached 41.61 million, recovering to 92.1% and 93.1% of levels at the end of 2017, respectively. According to an expert consultation by the Ministry, the number of live pigs from January to February this year is expected increase by about 25% compared with the same period of the previous year.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the number of live pigs slaughtered has increased significantly since August 2020. Especially in recent months, the growth momentum is very good. The slaughter volume in November and December increased by more than 40% year-on-year.

In addition, from the perspective of the central reserve pork supply, a total of 670,000 tons of reserve pork will be released in 2020. Four batches of 110,000 tons have been released in January this year, and will continue to be released in batches in February.

In terms of prices, the price of live pigs continued to decline in early January this year, from about 36.7 yuan per kilogram to about 32 yuan at present; pork prices have also begun to decline, and the wholesale price fell from 47.64 yuan per kilogram, which was the highest in January, to February. 45.30 yuan on the 4th.
