Since October of last year Chinese hog production has continued to improve. According to statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics, the live pig census at the end of the first quarter of 2020 was 321.2 million, an increase of 3.5% from the end of the fourth quarter of last year, of which 33.81 million were breeding sows, an increase of 9.8%.

Due to the decrease in consumption, the tight supply and demand of pork has eased and prices have fallen. The pork price in March decreased by 6.9% month-on-month, and the average pork market price in early April was 53.84 yuan per kilogram, which has been declining for 7 consecutive weeks, with a cumulative decrease of 9%.

Imports of agricultural products such as soybeans and pork continued to grow. In the first quarter, soybean imports were 17.792 million tons, an increase of 6.2% year-on-year; pork imports were 951,000 tons.

More than 90% of feed and veterinary medicine companies as well as pig slaughtering enterprises have resumed business.
