According to the data published by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, in the first half of 2019, meat production has reached 39.11 million tonnes, a drop by 2.1% with respect to 2019. Although beef, lamb and chicken production have grown, the production of pork has dropped by 5.5%, with a fall by 6.2% in the number of pigs slaughtered and a total pork production of 24.7 million tonnes, 1.43 million tonnes less than in the same period in 2018.

The decrease in pork production is a direct consequence of the important drop in the pig census caused by African swine fever, that is affecting China since August 2018. By the end of June 2019, the pig census was of 348 million pigs (61.43 million heads less), this entailing a drop by 15%.
