According to data from China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, by the end of November the country's census of breeding pigs and sows was already at 90% of its normal annual levels prior to the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF).
In 23 of the provinces, production capacity has been restored ahead of schedule and censuses are expected to return to normal pre-ASF levels during the first half of next year.
Pig production is the main livestock activity in China. The production value of the pig industry represents one third of the total production value of animal husbandry, and pork production accounts for almost two thirds of meat production. The price of pork is closely related to the level of consumer prices.
