The number of live pigs in the country at the end of June was about 340 million head, an increase of nearly 30 million head over the end of last year. The supply of live pigs and piglets has been recovering for five consecutive months, indicating that the commercial fattening pigs available for sale after July will gradually increase, and the supply of pork to the market will continue to improve.
The number of sows has been growing for 9 consecutive months and has increased 28.6% compared with September last year.
Pork imports this year are expected to increase by more than 1 million tons from last year. In the first five months of this year, 1.724 million tons of pork were imported , an increase of 146.2% year-on-year.
With the COVID-19 situation effectively controlled, the catering industry has resumed its operations. It is expected that the consumption of pork in the restaurant industry will continue to grow in the later period.
In general, pork prices tend to rise seasonally from June to September. This year, growth in consumption post-pandemic will be added to this phenomenon, and the upward pressure may be even greater. Additionally, heavy rainfall in parts of the south has had a certain impact on hog production and product transportation, and has also pushed up pork prices in some areas.
