The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has published Chinese Taipei's self-declaration of freedom from African swine fever (ASF). ASF has not been observed in Chinese Taipei.

According to the agricultural statistics report of 2023 by the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), Executive Yuan, the number of swine farms in Chinese Taipei was 5,804 with 5,319,203 heads, the large majority of which are in the Taiwan Region. In addition, there are Taiwanese wild boars (Sus scrofa taivanus), primarily distributed in mountainous areas in relatively low numbers.

Chinese Taipei consists of four main islands, including Taiwan's main island, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu Islands, with the Tropic of Cancer crossing over the southern region of Taiwan Island. Taiwan Main Island is the largest island and consitutes the majority portion of the landmass (over 90%) of the country. Being geographically independent, Chinese Taipei shares no terrestrial borders with any other countries, which is an inherent advantage in the control of ASF.
