The Colombian Agriculture Institute (ICA), in coordination with Porkcolombia, found that a large area of the country, where industrialized pig production is concentrated, is now free of the virus that causes Aujeszky's disease (pseudorabies).
Considering that serological sampling, as part of active surveillance, and monitoring of notifications have yielded negative results since 2015, and that guidelines from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) have been followed, the ICA was able to demonstrate the absence of viral activity, which allowed this zone in Colombia to be self-declared as free of Auyeszky's disease.
The free zone consists of Antioquia (except Urabá and Bajo Cauca Antioqueños), Boyacá, Caldas, Caquetá, Cauca (north and central), Casanare (south), Chocó, Cundinamarca, Huila, Meta, Quindío, Risaralda, Santander, Tolima and Valle del Cauca.
"This area has a pig population of approximately 2.7 million animals on about 37,000 swine farms, and is home to 95% of the country's industrialized pig production, the main genetic nuclei, and the slaughterhouses for pork export," said ICA's CEO, Deyanira Barrero León.
