At the meeting, the work plan was determined and vaccination efforts were coordinated in the areas where the outbreaks have been detected, in order to help control the disease.
It should be noted that the presentation of this outbreak does NOT affect the sanitary status of the areas certified as free of classical swine fever (CSF) by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) since Sucre is a region where there is viral circulation and is not part of these free zones. The department, along with the other departments of the Atlantic coast, is within the CSF control zone, where vaccination is one of the main measures to prevent the disease.
"The Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) has a response protocol when notified about clinical signs compatible with offially controlled diseases, to carry out a timely management of the same and to prevent the country's livestock production from being affected in the case they are detected. In this specific situation, we have advanced with inter-institutional efforts and with the pig producers of the department, with the objective of containing the disease and preventing its spread to other geographical areas", explained Edilberto Brito, deputy manager of Animal Protection of the ICA.
Currently, the departments of Antioquia, Chocó, Caldas, Cundinamarca, Quindío, Valle del Cauca, Cauca, Huila, Tolima, Caquetá, Meta, Boyacá, Santander, and Risaralda are free of CSF and are among the two free zones certified by the WOAH in Colombia.
ICA calls on the authorities, epidemiological experts, producers, swine traders, and citizens in general to notify the entity of any suspicion of the presence of the disease.
