The Guide is the starting point for promoting the establishment of small and medium-scale biogas plants on pig farms. The guide includes information on the components and characteristics of pig manure, details and techniques on slurry use, cost estimates, as well as the financial and tax incentives that can be obtained for this type of project.

"This initiative will facilitate and encourage, at all scales of pig production, the use of manure and by-products it produces, minimizing environmental impacts and maximizing production profitability margins; the main premise of the National Strategy for Circular Economy promoted by this government," said Ricardo Lozano, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development.

This makes clear that a waste sometimes associated with bad odors, polluting gas emissions, and problems with final disposal, can instead be used to drive development for small and medium-sized pig farmers through the production of biogas.

In addition to the advantages mentioned, the use of pig manure to generate biogas can be used as a source of renewable energy, allowing areas not connected to the electricity grid to generate heat and, in some cases electricity, thus contributing to improved rural development.
